Although I was familiar with the story, this was the first time I’d read this book for myself. I picked it up specifically because a friend said that it was similar to The Century Cube.
I love the narrator and the tone he sets for the book from the get go. You feel sympathetic for the kids, who are independent and eager to learn and think for themselves. And the terrible Count Olaf is just terrible, terrible.
This is such an easy story to read and good for all ages, despite having “no happy ending, …no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.”
